Buy A Book. Help A Child!

‘Tis the season! No matter who you are or what you believe, the holiday season ushers in a time of giving, a time of sharing, a time to reflect on the old year and the promise of the new year.

One of the things I celebrate (and not just during the holiday season) is my love of reading. It has always been one of the greatest joys of my life and is why I am a writer. This year, my daughter and partner in ARK Stories, Kimberley Johnson, and I have decided to spread the joy. For every ARK Stories book purchased between now and midnight December 25, our company will donate $1 (one dollar) to the K.I.N.D. Fund. That means Kids In Need of Desks and it was launched by one of our favorite MSNBC hosts, Lawrence O’Donnell, in coordination with UNICEF. Read about it here.

Whether you purchase a paperback or an eBook, we will donate $1 of the proceeds to K.I.N.D. We’ll post the final tally once the figures are in. In the meantime, you’ll get to read some really cool books! Great Christmas presents too!

Visit ARK Stories to read samples of each book.

Some Pertinent Questions for the GOP

I’ve got a few questions that need answering and I haven’t heard anyone from the right coming up with answers – at least any answers that make even a modicum of sense

  1. Why is President Obama’s religion such a big issue but nobody brings up the fact that Mitt belongs to a religion that is viewed by many as a cult? Why is it never mentioned that the stated intention of Joseph Smith, who ran for president in 1844, was to create a Theodemocracy which, of course, would be guided by the tenets of Mormonism? And does Mitt Romney subscribe to those views?

  1. Why is Obama STILL being asked to produce ‘a valid birth certificate’ while Mitt Romney’s supporters rail against him being asked to release his tax returns?

  1. Why is Obamacare so bad for the country when Romneycare is so good for Massachusetts?

  1. Why do Republicans accuse Obamacare of ‘death panels’ when time and again, GOP political figures state they don’t think people with cancer, with brain tumors, or who just can’t afford medical insurance should have access to life saving care?

  1. Why does the leadership of the GOP keep on saying that Obama has failed to create new jobs when they REFUSE to bring his bill to the floor? It’s been languishing since last October.

  1. Why does the GOP want to raise taxes on the already stressed middle class but lower taxes for the already rolling in moola rich people? How will that help?

  1. What makes the GOP think that rich people are ‘job creators’? If that is the case, we should be DROWNING in jobs after a decade of the Bush tax cuts. So where are those jobs?

  1. Why does the GOP insist there is no War On Women when they spend most of their time coming up with new and more onerous legislation to humiliate and impoverish them?

  1. Why are police, firefighters and teachers the enemy? What have they done that is so injurious to society?

  1.  Why is science reviled in favor of fairy tales that state the earth is only 5,000 years old and people inhabited the planet alongside dinosaurs? Isn’t that the same as thinking the moon landing was faked?

Truthfully, I’m not holding my breath waiting for answers. From where I sit, the GOP isn’t in the business of handing out answers. They just hate Obama and will say and do ANYTHING they think will make people vote against him (as opposed to actually voting FOR Romney).

Oh! I have one more question (at least for the time being).

  1. Why does the GOP think we’re all so stupid?

GOP: Hungry Like the Wolf

Are we sitting vigil at the death of democracy? All the evidence points to it. It’s been happening for a long time and we are in the end game.

A little history:
In the 2000 election, Jeb Bush purges voters from Florida rolls to gain the advantage for his halfwit brother. The Supreme Court installs George W. Bush as the 43rd president of the United States.

Intelligence is ignored, we are attacked on September 11, 2001 and an era of fear begins. There are those who believe this was not an accident.

The invasion of Iraq under false pretenses ushers in the wet dream of the Military Industrial Complex: a war machine in place to reap unimaginable profits on the backs of the American people, who in so many cases are gung ho for the travesty of Iraq.

Massive tax cuts for the wealthy and two wars off the books siphon off the surplus left by President Clinton.

Insane loans made to people who can barely fog up a mirror—and some who have great credit but are too trusting or too uninformed to ask the right questions—packaged and sold as “securities” and wagered against by the banks that sold them.

Right Wing judges appointed to the Supreme Court, insuring a majority.

It all comes crashing down in 2008 and George Bush happily skedaddles out of town, leaving a mess to the newly elected, and absolutely despised by the Right, black president.

Even with a Democratic Congress, Republicans manage to hamstring legislation by invoking the filibuster in a nearly constant fashion.

Using the flood of funds unleashed by the Citizens United decision, Republicans manage to convince the American public they made a mistake electing Obama and in 2010, a new wave of certifiable lunatics enters Congress and things get even worse.

So here we are. Mitt Romney goes on television and around the country spewing outright lies in his campaign speeches and even when the media reports that they are lies, he doesn’t care and continues to give voice to the lies. In Wisconsin, where Democrats are in the majority, an unpopular governor wins by a huge margin, with union households and union members giving him their votes. In California, a proposition to add a $1 per pack tax on cigarettes that was ahead by two thirds just a couple of months ago has most likely been voted down. We won’t know for certain until all the absentee ballots are counted but that really isn’t the issue here. Right now, Prop 29 is defeated and it should have won by a landslide.

What are the connecting threads? There is only one. MONEY. Money to turn things on their head. Money to make a lie the truth. Money to outspend the opposition, no matter what the issue, no matter what is good for the people of this country.

Rules of thumb:
  1. When you hear a Republican screaming about freedom, it isn’t your freedom that is at issue. That’s up for grabs. It’s their freedom to continue to profit from the misery visited upon the American people.
  1. When you hear Republicans ranting about “activist courts,” they are not talking about their beloved Republican judges who are the most activist we’ve seen in modern times.
  1. When you hear Republicans preaching about “morality,” they are preaching the politics of hatred and repression against gays, women, immigrants and anyone else who doesn’t share their poisoned philosophy.
  1. When you hear Republicans bemoaning the lies told by the Democrats, you can be sure a big lie is about to spill from their lips.
  1. When you hear Republicans rant and rave about the “union special interests” and would have you believe the unions can compete monetarily with the likes of the Koch Brothers, you have to know that THEY ARE LYING.
  1. This is for those on the Right (who I know are lurking and waiting to pounce). When you hear the Republicans scream about the Democrats taking away your guns, you’d better think about this: when they take it all, when they achieve total control, thanks to you, they will find a way to convince you to surrender your weapons. They WILL do it. And then, once that is accomplished, they will strip you of everything: access to healthcare, retirement benefits, decent working conditions, food stamps (because you take advantage of them too), unemployment benefits—the whole enchilada—because their disdain for you may be more pronounced than their disdain for liberals because you are the sheep who were so easy to control. And you will be left defenseless.
We are bearing witness to the destruction of the American Dream. We are sitting vigil at the demise of our democracy. The Feudal Lords are winning. They have no allegiance to any country or anything other than the accumulation of more wealth and more power.

It is up to us to stop them, for if they win in November, we are screwed. What their supporters don’t realize is that they will be screwed right along with us liberals.

We don’t have the money edge, but we do have the numbers edge. What we CAN do, what we MUST do is rise up and do our own lockstep and demand that our Congressional representatives do the same. It is said that trying to get Democrats to agree on things is like herding cats. It’s time to go Clint Eastwood on them with a touch of Gandhi. It is time to stop being an armchair activist and get up on your feet and go out and GET THE JOB DONE. This is our last chance.

Burning the ground, I break from the crowd
I'm on the hunt, I'm after you
I smell like I sound, I'm lost and I'm found
And I'm hungry like the wolf
Strut on a line, it's discord and rhyme
I'm on the hunt, I'm after you
Mouth is alive with juices like wine
And I'm hungry like the wolf

The Satanic Budget: Death To The Weakling

A little over a week ago, Paul Ryan had to disavow his heroine, Ayn Rand, after his church—the Catholic Church—came down on him for espousing her philosophy. The truth is that Ayn Rand is the darling of the Republican Party and Ryan’s budget is based upon principles she has championed.

I’ll be honest. Other than knowing the names of her books and the obvious conclusion one would come to upon reading the title The Virtue of Selfishness, I didn’t know a whole lot about her ideas and beliefs. So I did some research and even downloaded Anthem to my Kindle. It’s a short (100 pages in length) fable that shines a light on her beginnings in Russia and winds up encapsulating her philosophy. While doing my research, it struck me that a lot of what she had to say and a lot of what I’m hearing from the Right these days is eerily similar to another book I’ve had the occasion to research for my soon to be released novel CRAZY.

In the YouTube clip above, Rand states that if a person is weak, they are undeserving of love. In the book I used to research the character in my novel it states: Death to the weakling, wealth to the strong!

In Anthem, at the very end, the sacred word is identified: EGO. In the book I used to research my novel, it says: Rational self-interest would be encouraged and a healthy ego championed.

Rand equates altruism, the unselfish regard for or devotion to the well being of others, as a destructive force on society. She states: (paraphrased) “The equation of selfishness with evil has caused the arrested moral development of mankind and needs to be rejected.” In my research for my novel, the book I was using states: “There is no false altruism or mandatory love thy neighbor concept…(The philosophy espoused) is a blatantly selfish, brutal philosophy. It is based on the belief that human beings are inherently selfish, violent creatures, that life is a Darwinian struggle for survival of the fittest, that only the strong survive and the earth will be ruled by those who fight to win the ceaseless competition that exists in all jungles—including those of urbanized society.”

By now, I’m sure you’re wondering what book I was using for my research. That book is The Satanic Bible. That’s right! Those Bible thumping, Moral Majority, Tea Party fanatics are embracing tenets that could just as well have been written by Anton Szandor LaVey, the author of The Satanic Bible and founder of the Church of Satanism.

Everything Rand has written, everything she was about, dovetails rather nicely with the religion (if you want to call it that) of Satanism. So it follows that disciples of Ayn Rand would also find a lot to like in The Satanic Bible. To hell with the weak, for they are useless and a burden on society. Anyone who can’t pull their own weight, regardless of the circumstances, deserves no help because according to Ayn Rand and Anton LaVey, an individual’s primary moral obligation is to achieve his own well being. It isn’t a leap too far to come to the conclusion that if you can’t do that, then you don’t deserve to live. I can still hear the echoes of the audience at that Republican debate screaming “Let him die!” to the hypothetical question posed to Ron Paul about the 30 year old without health insurance who faced a life threatening situation.

That philosophy is on full display in the Ryan Budget, which cuts food stamps, programs for the poor and working poor, ends Medicare and Medicaid and replaces them with vouchers, raises taxes on the poorest Americans, throws out the Affordable Care Act, cuts everything from education to transportation and gives $3 trillion in tax breaks to corporations and the rich. As Jonathan Bernstein concluded in his May 4 article in the Washington Post blog, the effect of the Ryan Budget will be, with a few exceptions, to effectively shut down the entire federal government. The exceptions, I believe, are defense and never-ending tax cuts to the wealthy.

People like Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney and all the rest of those leading the Tea Party types around by the nose don’t have to worry if they get sick. They’ve got money! I can’t help but think of Alexandra Pelosi's video and that toothless guy who hates government but says he deserves food stamps. People like him go to the polls and vote against their own self interest in favor of a philosophy that cares absolutely nothing for them and they don’t even know it. It’s that whole “Keep your filthy government hands off my Medicare!” argument and it’s all because they are misinformed, fearful and angry. Maybe someone should tell them that their heroes are acolytes who worship at the altar of a philosophy that is interchangeable with the teachings embodied in The Satanic Bible.

A Teachable Moment

Sometimes I just like feel-good stories and I’ve got one!

Yesterday a friend of mine was bragging to a co-worker about his daughters and I just happened to be walking by. My friend, John, was bragging about his daughters, aged five and seven. One of them had just celebrated her birthday and, as usual with kids, a party was thrown and her classmates were invited. Usually in situations like this, the guests bring a gift and the going rate for the value of the gift is generally accepted as $10. However, on this occasion, John and the girls’ mother did something a little different. Each guest was requested to bring a donation of not more than $5 to be given to the local animal shelter.

What a great idea! Ideas like that always make me wish I’d thought of it. I asked John for the picture he was showing off because all one has to do is look at the faces of his girls and you can see that eschewing gifts in favor of helping shelter animals provided a greater gift than anything wrapped in paper and tied up with a bow could have ever been. The picture, by the way, is being published in the local paper and that’s another gift: the gift of being recognized for doing something good.

Sasha and Sophia and their guests were all given a gift at that birthday party: the gift of knowing that even though they’re just kids, they can make a real difference. I take my hat off to John and to the girls’ mom for turning a children’s party into a teachable moment that will be remembered by all the kids and particularly by Sasha and Sophia. Everyone had fun, they all got to feel good about themselves and $67 was raised for the local shelter.

It’s the little things in life that are the most precious and lessons learned at such a young age stay with us throughout our lives.

99% Spring: InThe Trenches

I spent this lovely spring afternoon at a training meeting for the 99% Spring. This is a new effort backed by a long list of organizations to utilize the momentum begun by the Occupy Movement and to put the power elite on notice that the Occupy movement wasn’t a flash in the pan, and the second act has just begun. The meeting I attended was at full capacity—175 people—and they came ready to learn, to strategize and to make a difference.

The focus of the training was on three things:
(1) The Economy: How we got here, who’s responsible and how we fix it.
(2) Non-Violent Direct Action: Taking a cue from previous movements that used non-violent methods to achieve goals and putting those methods to use.
(3)  Action: Planning campaigns to effect change both locally and on a national level.

The first thing I noticed was the great preponderance of older people in the group. There were some young people in attendance but they were in the minority. I’m not sure of the reason; although I suspect they were simply unaware the meeting was taking place. I do know the email I received notifying me of the meeting was organized by MoveOn in cooperation with Rebuild The Dream Innovation Fund and the dozens of other organizations that have come together to form the alliance. Whether it was the demographics of the email list or apathy on the part of the youth, I can’t say.
The meeting kicked off with a video detailing social movements in the country, from women’s suffrage, to worker’s rights, to civil rights. It was a rah rah kind of video and served to remind everyone in the room that although these things take time, social action movements can and do accomplish all sorts of things that at the time seem insurmountable.

In preparation for actions, there were role-playing exercises, one of which was called The Hassle Exercise, where each of us got to take on the roles of either a banker whose bank had just been invaded by 99% protestors, or one of the protestors. We then got to reverse roles. I suppose the purpose of that was to illustrate how it would feel on both ends of the issue, but I didn’t really find any value in it. The truly informative exercise was when the room was divided into three large groups: protestors, bank employees and observers. Admittedly, the five or ten minutes prep time wasn’t sufficient to form a real action plan, but the exercise highlighted the need for having a real strategy before proceeding with an action. If a mere role playing exercise devolved into chaos with people shouting disparate demands and having no unifying sense of what they were doing and why they were there, in a real action, all that would be achieved would be chaos and fuel for critics. That one short exercise drove the point home better than any lecture could have done.

There are those who would complain that the Occupy Movement is being co-opted by MoveOn and all the other organizations that have come together to make this huge push for social justice. But as one of the organizers of the meeting said, being co-opted isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s a compliment to the energy Occupy has infused into a country sick and tired of being overrun and pushed around by the monied interests that have stolen our homes, our retirements and the future of our children. Nobody is talking about marginalizing Occupy. The intent is to focus that energy, expand on it, hone it and point it with laser sharpness at those institutions that have taken what is ours.

This past week, there were 977 training sessions around the country. That’s thousands of people who are now fired up and ready to roll. I’m waiting for the next email to show up telling me where I’m needed. I’ll be there. And I’ll let you know what happened. This was just the first shot in a volley that won’t stop until we get what we want: social justice and accountability.

If you want to learn more, log on to MoveOn.org and go to the 99% Spring page to find out more about what’s happening in your area.

The following organizations have called for a 99% Spring: Jobs With Justice, United Auto Workers,National Peoples Action, National Domestic Workers Alliance, MoveOn.org, New Organizing Institute, Movement Strategy Center, The Other 98%, Service Employees International Union, AFL-CIO, Rebuild the Dream, Color of Change, UNITE-HERE, Greenpeace, Institute for Policy Studies, PICO National Network, New Bottom Line, Veterans of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement, SNCC Legacy Project, United Steel Workers, National Education Association, Working Families Party, Communications Workers of America, United States Student Association, Rainforest Action Network, American Federation of Teachers, Leadership Center for the Common Good, UNITY, National Guestworker Alliance, 350.org, The Ruckus Society, Citizen Engagement Lab, smartMeme Strategy & Training Project, Right to the City Alliance, Pushback Network, Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, Progressive Democrats of America, Change to Win, Grassroots Global Justice Alliance, Campaign for America's Future, Public Campaign Action Fund, Fuse Washington, Missourians Organizing for Reform and Empowerment, Citizen Action of New York, Engage, United Electrical Workers Union, National Day Laborers Organizing Network, Alliance for a Just Society, The Partnership for Working Families, United Students Against Sweatshops, Presente.org, Get Equal, American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement, Corporate Accountability International, American Federation of Government Employees, Training for Change, People Organized for Westside Renewal (POWER), Student Labor Action Project, Colorado Progressive Coalition, Green for All, DC Jobs with Justice, Midwest Academy, The Coffee Party, International Forum on Globalization, UFCW International Union, Sunflower Community Action, Illinois People's Action, Lakeview Action Coalition, Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada, International Brotherhood of the Teamsters, Resource Generation, Highlander Research and Education Center, TakeAction Minnesota, Energy Action Coalition, Earthhome.us.

Glenn Beck's Delusions of Grandeur

Former FOX personality and Teletubbie look-alike Glenn Beck has taken his delirium to the next step and built a set that closely resembles the Oval Office. Mr. Beck plans to deliver his three to four minute long speeches in what he announced will be “Reagan-esque in tone” on his GBTV show. Mr Beck will be giving his weekly speeches to say “the things we wish the President would say to the American people – or the things he should say.”

This isn’t the first time he’s done so. Last year, he threw together a makeshift Oval Office set to proclaim his solidarity with the Japanese people in the wake of the disaster in that country. According to Beck, President Obama’s speech regarding the disaster was tepid and wouldn’t rally people to donate to private charities. So he got out there and did the job himself!

The sane mind reels at the hubris and downright insanity evoked by the image of Glenn Beck in the Oval Office. The truth, though, is that Beck REALLY wants is to re-enact that famous scene from Superman II.

In your dreams, Glenn. In your fevered dreams!

Rush Limbaugh and the "S" word and Bill Maher and the "C" word

A firestorm has erupted over Rush Limbaugh calling Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute” simply because she went before Congress and testified in favor of free contraceptive coverage. So I guess any woman taking birth control could then be construed as a slut and/or prostitute in Limbaugh’s world. Personally, I am happy to see Limbaugh taking the heat and would be ecstatic to see him taken off the air for lack of advertisers. Behavior and language like that doesn’t belong on the airwaves and it is a source of never-ending amazement to me that Limbaugh has garnered such a huge following.

Like it or not, the fact is we live in a free country and people like Limbaugh have freedom of speech guaranteed by the First Amendment as much as anyone else. His freedom can be curtailed if enough advertisers pull their dollars from his show. We can vote with our wallets.

On Friday evening’s edition of Real Time, Bill Maher alluded to Limbaugh’s call to President Obama to return the $1 million super pack donation from Maher. The reason, according to Limbaugh, was that Maher had called Sarah Palin a “dumb twat” and a “cunt” and therefore his money was tainted. Maher’s response was that he could say what he wanted because he’s on HBO and has no sponsors.

I don’t agree with Limbaugh but I do have something to say to Mr. Maher. Bill, your rationalization was lame. I watch your show and I like it. I know you didn’t refer to Mrs. Palin in those terms on your show. You did it, from what I can gather, during one of your stand up comedy routines. You don’t like her. Neither do I. You think she’s stupid. So do I. I may even privately agree with your assessment. But to use that language in a public venue is tacky. Really. Stooping to the level of those you criticize takes away your credibility. There is so much you could have said about Palin that was true and yet, you chose to use terminology that I can guarantee the great majority of women in your audience found offensive, even if they were rabid Palin haters.

We see so many laments about the state of public discourse in this country today. Fingers are pointed, insults hurled, the noise gets louder and louder until nobody is listening to what the other has to say. We on the Liberal side can’t do anything about the hatred and venom spewing non-stop from the right but we can take a cue from the man we elected to the presidency and use words with care. Language is an amazing tool when used properly. It moved this nation to elect our first black president. It was President Obama’s use of language—his rhetorical genius—that made people listen. He ran against a woman and never once did he use insulting language. Never once did he take the cheap shots he could have at McCain’s silly running mate. He rose above the fray and acted like an adult.

As Liberals, it is up to us to hold high the banner of standards to be set. If the other side ignores them, it will only shine a light on their shortcomings. Never should we become the very thing we criticize.

The Power of the Internet

Little did I know when I sat down to write my latest article for Addicting Info that the piece would wind up causing a veritable firestorm on the Internet. I related the experience my friend Barbara Johnson (my ex cousin-in-law) had at her mother's funeral. Barbara is gay and was refused communion by the priest who conducted the ceremony. He then left the altar during Barbara's eulogy and ultimately refused to go to the cemetery to give the final blessing, saying that he was sick.  My intention was to stir people up but I was unprepared for the outpouring of emotion and support and am still surprised. As a writer, it has always been my wish to be able to touch people in a positive way. In the piece I wrote for Addicting Info I wanted not only to inform but to try in some small way to right what I perceived as a terrible wrong. I don't know how this will end but I do know that I am humbled and gratified by the overwhelming response. Thank you to everyone who has sent good wishes to Barbara. And thank you to all who stood up and counted themselves among those who believe in equality for all.

FIGHTING THE FORCES OF HATRED

For reasons unknown to me, I am compelled to read responses to political news articles on Yahoo. Seriously, this has got to stop. The outpouring of hatred there is almost too much to comprehend.

I am of the opinion that one should always be cordial, even if one disagrees with someone’s stated opinion. If you remain cordial, you can have a conversation. If you can have a conversation, you can come to terms. If you can come to terms, you can get on with things. Sadly, this no longer seems to be the case in the United States of America today.

I just read an article about New Jersey Governor Chris Christy and how he vetoed a gay marriage bill sent to him by the state legislature. No news there. No way no how was a Republican governor going to sign off on something like that. So it really wasn’t much of a news story. The responses to the story were almost without exception an outpouring of hatred and vitriol that is truly astonishing to me. One of my favorites was where some person posted chapter and verse numbers from the Bible (at least I think it was the Bible) but didn’t bother to name the book of the Bible, so unless one was willing to go through the entire book and look up each chapter and verse in each book of the Bible, the reference numbers were meaningless. The post was supposed to prove how God hates gays. I simply posted a reply saying that it sounded pretty Old Testament to me.

There are all these so-called Christians who, if they met Jesus Christ on the street, would refer to him as a dirty rotten hippie and denounce his unrealistic teachings about loving thy neighbor and treating others as you would have them treat you as socialist and communist. They’d call him out for hanging out with Mary Magdeline – that HO! -  and wonder why in the hell a 33 year old man was still single – Is he GAY?  In the end, I think Jesus would wind up just like he did back in the day. Maybe they’d just strap him down in an execution chamber because hey! we’re CIVILIZED now.

I am sick and tired of all the hatred and the willful ignorance displayed by those on the right. I am sick and tired of the monied interests taking advantage of the ignorance of those people and I am sick and tired of people who are too timid to stand up and say something and DO something about it.

As hard as it is to imagine, we could actually, by some terrible fluke or more likely some crime at the ballot boxes of America, wind up with Rick Santorum or Mitt Romney (it’s hard to decide which is worse) as president. There are vast sums of money out there waiting in the wings to get rid of this country’s first black president. They will do everything in their power to bring down this president and get rid of progressives in our government. So I’m doing all that I can to insure it won’t happen. I contribute to campaigns, even if I’m broke. I blog, I write for Addicting Info, I talk to anyone and everyone who will listen and if they’re on the other side, I am respectful of them even if they are not respectful of me but I make sure my point is made. More importantly, when I find an Independent, Liberal or Progressive who feels discontent because things haven’t moved quickly enough, I try to make them see that this isn’t something that can be remedied overnight. I remind them that President Obama told us all it would take more than one term in office, maybe more than two terms in office and perhaps more than one or two presidents to repair the damage that has been done to this country. And I ask them the most important question of all: Do you really think that having any of the Republican candidates for president at the helm would make this country stronger, safer and a better place to live?

I invite anyone who cares about this country to do the same. We may not have the money the 1% has but we’ve got the numbers. It’s time to use them!

Sharia law and Oklahoma

Recently a federal appeals court upheld a block on a proposed constitutional amendment to ban Sharia law in Oklahoma courtrooms. There have been howls of outrage from the Right, stating that the will of 70% of Oklahoma voters is being thwarted. The court ruled that since the only religion referred to in the amendment was Islam, that religion was being singled out, hence the unconstitutionality.

Not to blow my own horn, but I’m a pretty intelligent person and up until now, I really had no idea what Sharia law entails. Truth to tell, I still don’t know a whole lot but what I have discovered in a search for information is that Sharia mostly covers contracts, hygiene, diet, prayer, fasting, as well as crime, politics and economics. I read through several arguments made by attorneys who argued the case to block the amendment and their arguments boiled down to it is sometimes necessary to know Sharia law in order to understand the litigants in any given case in the event said litigants are Muslim. Makes sense to me. Nobody said that Sharia law was going to be enforced. Indeed no one on the other side of the issue could point out so much as once instance where Sharia law had ever been applied in the state of Oklahoma. But I do understand the efficacy of being aware of cultural differences when arguing, understanding and making judgments in any given case.

There are a few things that I sure wouldn’t want to be subjected to, for instance female circumcision, which to my way of thinking is beyond barbaric. However, there are arguments within Islam about that being a law or something less than law.

All that said, here is my point. There are parts of Sharia law that one would think the Right would LOVE! For instance, Sharia law defines marriage as being between a man and a woman. Homosexuality is strictly forbidden. Abortion is also forbidden except in instances of medical risk to the woman. That actually sounds a bit more humane than the stance taken by the Right. Sharia states that all the answers to any questions can be found in the Koran, much as the Religious Right claims all the answers are in the Bible. Now, I’m not an authority on the Koran but I do know that it and the Bible overlap in places. With so many similarities, one would think the Right would have embraced Sharia law rather than demonize it. This just tells me that people don’t have a clue what Sharia law is or isn’t but they marched in lockstep to the polls to outlaw something they knew nothing about.

I believe that religion has no place in government and I’m talking ANY religion, especially the misogynistic, violent and hateful brand of Christianity espoused by so many on the Right. To them I have only one comment: Jesus would weep.

Oh Lord, She's Going All Liberal On Us Again!

I hear all this talk about “freedom” from the likes of Ron Paul. I agree with him on the subject of war but that’s pretty much where it stops. To him, freedom means you don’t have to seat a black man or a Hispanic or a Muslim or anyone you don’t particularly care for at your lunch counter. He and the other Republican candidates talk about personal responsibility and posit that we all have the responsibility to provide for ourselves. They ignore the very real fact that some people—sadly an ever-growing number of people—simply don’t have the wherewithal to purchase health insurance. They denigrate those who need food stamps and call them lazy freeloaders, never once taking the time to investigate why there is a need for assistance. I recall George Bush and his comment to the divorced mother in Nebraska who worked three jobs: “Uniquely American, isn’t it? I mean, that’s fantastic that you’re doing that….Get any sleep?” GEORGE BUSH IN NEBRASKA  I don’t know about you but to me, that isn’t freedom. That’s slavery.

My favorite is when people talk about how they want smaller government. I agree that there are certain things government should stay out of: telling a woman what she can and cannot do with her body, defining marriage and telling us who we can and cannot love. These are personal issues and government has no right to dictate to any of us how we conduct our personal lives as long as we stay within the law and do our part. But government does have the right, indeed the duty, to require certain things of all of us so the society in which we live provides a safe and nurturing environment where we can achieve our potential, whatever that may be, and live the American Dream.

There’s the argument that regulations stifle the economy. That’s bull! Regulations may curb profits somewhat but certainly will not erase them. I own stocks. I like getting those dividends. But I also like clean air and water, safe foods and medicines, airline safety and consumer protections and think it’s worth taking a little off the bottom line of corporations that have grown fat on the profits reaped from having the great opportunities this country has afforded them.

The biggest mistake the Right makes is looking at the government as something separate from the rest of us. And maybe today it is because those on the Right have managed to set things up much as they were in the Europe from which our ancestors fled. We are now living in conditions that mirror the Feudal system where there were the Nobles and the Serfs. I never signed up to be a serf. I was raised on “We the People” and “a government of the people, by the people, for the people” and I was taught to revere the sentiments expressed on the Statue of Liberty: “Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”

One of the big hits on television these days is Extreme Home Makeover. It’s a feel good show where a family that has fallen on hard times is saved by their community. They get a new house, sometimes college scholarships for their kids, mortgages are paid off and everything in their once miserable and desperate lives is made better in one short week. It’s great but it’s just a TV show and no matter how many people they help, there are millions more who will never get that help. Meanwhile, Sears and Disneyland and whatever other businesses that pitch in and provide materials needed to get the project done get great PR. The fact is we have the ability to give people the help they need to better their lives, not on such a large scale but on a scale large enough to lift not just one family but our entire society. And we do that by paying taxes that provide social programs to give a helping hand to those who need it.

Here’s what freedom means to me: knowing that if I’m sick I can go to the doctor of my choice, be treated and not be impoverished by paying huge premiums for health insurance with a huge deductible to meet, knowing that after working hard all my life, I will have a dignified retirement where I don’t have to fight my cats for dinner, or be put out on the street to fend for myself. I know I have to do my part. I have always known it and I have done it. But there have been times when I needed government assistance. At one point in my life I needed food stamps so I could feed myself and my daughter. At one point in my life I needed federal assistance for daycare. It made the difference of my being able to continue to work instead of going on welfare. It gave me the freedom to continue paying my fair share of taxes and contributing to society. I have had to collect unemployment insurance and so have a lot of people I know. It gave us the freedom to be able to pay our bills and go out and look for another job. Freedom is knowing that someone has your back and in a society as large as the one in which we live, the only way to do it is by collecting taxes and – oh God, here it comes – redistributing a bit of the wealth to insure the health of society as a whole.

We are at a crossroads in the United States. It can go either way. One way or another we are about to give birth to a new way of life. I can only hope that sanity rules and the fears of those who made guns the number one Christmas purchase this year are laid to rest and people realize that we are all one and that a nation divided against itself cannot stand. I will do everything I can to insure that a Rick Santorum or a Mitt Romney or whoever the hell the fractured Republican party puts up for president never sees the inside of the Oval Office.

Rome wasn’t built in a day and the mess left by the Bush administration can’t be cleaned up in three years or one presidential term or, as our President has told us, by one president serving two terms. But we can begin. We have begun, despite the rabid obstructionism of the Right and things have steadily been getting better, even though it’s hard to feel it. Because, admittedly, things are still bad. But we have the opportunity this year to erase the mistakes made in the 2010 election. So even if you’re not thrilled with President Obama, think about what he has had to deal with and what he has accomplished (if you don’t know, I’ll provide a few links so you can see for yourself) and then go out and work to elect candidates who put you first. And in November, go to the polls and vote for your own self-interest instead of the interests of corporate owned candidates who would step over your dying body on the way to their limos. Let’s get this country back on track. We can do it. Yes we can!
